Traveling through a lot of major cities, I’ve learned a number of tall hotels will throw a bar on their rooftop. I’ve also learned its a great way to get an amazing view for cheap.
Well, sometimes cheap.
Cocktails on rooftop bars can be underwhelming and expensive, but then again, they know you’re not there for the beverage.
One view in Chicago that kind of takes a different approach is the London House Hotel. They have a bar on the top floor, but then another on their rooftop. Food and drinks on both are fantastic, and the views from the rooftop are amazing. You certainly don’t need to get a food or drink to check out the view, but as someone dragging along a camera and tripod, sometimes I feel its necessary to grab a drink or two, tip well, then pull out the camera. The staff can be much more aconomdating if you’ve been around a bit and are friendly.
On the night I took the picture above, my wife and I got dressed up for a night out in the city, and started at London House. With my camera in tow, we had some snacks and beverages. When the sun got low and the lights of the city came alive, out came the tripod and camera and away we went.
I’ve also done this routine all over the world, from Rome, Italy to Las Vegas, Nevada to Houston, Texas. Seems the people to throw rooftop bars together oftentimes know a thing or two about amazing views. Or vice versa.
